22-23 February 2008
I spent a few hours at Kamfers Dam on Friday 22 February (afternoon/evening) and Saturday 23 February (morning) (working with Eddie and Charlene Stanley from ETV on a documentary on the breeding event). The breeding event is progressing well. The larger chicks are in two large crèches at the south-eastern and south-western end of the island (see images). There are many smaller chicks scattered across the island and even some very small chicks in nests. It appears as if some adults are still incubating eggs. It is very difficult to obtain an estimate of the number of chicks, but I reckon that there are a minimum of 3000.
